Sacred Silence

I was raised in a world which encourages differing opinions...so long as they are not uttered in public. "When the Prophet speaks, the debate is over." Elaine Cannon - Nov. Ensign 1978 p.108 The more I think about it, the less I believe that one can have a strict hierarchy and authentic voice of any kind. Those who rise in power do so by proving their allegiance to the existing system, tweaking it slightly to suit their own desires once they reach points of authority themselves. Whether politics or religion, Authentic dialogue encourages questions. Authentic dialogue treats participants with respect, but lets go of sacred cows. Authentic dialogue avoids logical fallacies and thought-stopping rhetoric.
The moment you declare a set of ideas to be immune from criticism, satire, derision, or contempt, freedom of thought becomes impossible. --Salman Rushdi
